Overly protruding ears can cause childhood and teen embarrassment. They can be treated by a procedure that brings them closer to the head. Earlobe problems such as an overly large holes from piercing can be treated at the same time.
Reasons to Have an Otoplasty
Most patients have otoplasty to put their ears in a more normal position and avoid embarrassment. The way you wear your hair figures into the decision. You have to be willing to wear a headband at night and during contact sports for six weeks after the surgery.
Consultation
At the consultation, Dr. Gewirtz and you will discuss your goals. The exact anatomic cause of the protrusion helps determine the surgical plan. Almost all otoplasties are done through a small incision behind your ears.
Recovery
You will have a bulky dressing protecting your ears which is removed in two days. Sutures are removed at a week and you will need to wear a headband during contact sports for six weeks
